September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. I read a lot on this topic. And as much as I learn about childhood cancer, there are a few things that shock me.
–Cancer is the leading disease-related cause of death in children In the U.S. I never knew this. Because I was lucky enough to live in a world where none of the children in my life were the unlucky 1/285.
–In the US, 1 in every 285 children will fight cancer. This floors me. During my career as a second grade teacher, 280 is about how many children I taught. I find this terrifying.
–Of every 8 children diagnosed with cancer, 1 will not survive. I know too many of these, children who lost 60, 70 years on this earth. What is the average life expectancy? 78 years? Forever young.
–Only 4 percent of National Cancer Institute research funding goes to study pediatric cancer. And a tiny percentage of that toward pediatric leukemia. THIS is why I started Lemonade 4 Leukemia. And why I Light the Night.
We’re forming a Light The Night fundraising team to walk in Glenview on Sunday, October 20th. The walk is at 5:00pm in The Glen.
Some of you may remember that I walked with my family in San Francisco last year. It was an incredibly powerful experience. Reese was still hospitalized, at that point she had been in the BMT isolation unit for 6 months (and little did we know she had another 2 months to go.) That night, we promised her that she could walk next year. And walk she will! We are so proud that she will be joining us for this walk carrying her WHITE lantern. Because a white lantern is carried by a blood cancer survivor!!!
Will you join me, Reese, and our family to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society? We WILL bring light to the darkness of cancer.
Visit our Team page HERE and join us on October 20! It will prove to be a glorious night! Thank you for considering!! All are welcome, Quinn, Reese, Claire, Chris, Nonnie and Poppy, and Gaga & Kari will all be coming, kids are VERY welcome! I will post more details here once our TEAM is up and running!!
